History

From 1911

Herts Bowling Club was inaugurated in 1911. The Green at Mildred Avenue, Watford opened in 1912, and in that same year the club was affiliated to London and Southern Counties Bowling Association. Subsequently the club was affiliated to The Hertfordshire Bowling Association in 1927 and to the Watford and District Bowling Association in 1981.

From the outset (1914) Herts Bowling Club hosted the Watford & District Bowling Association competition finals for some 65 years at their fine facilities.

On Saturday 1 May 1920, 50 members sat down to supper when President GB Dodwell presented the billiard competition prizes earned during the winter. At the same function, a handsome clock was donated to the Bowls Club by eight member families whose sons had been lost during World War One. This clock was installed inside the Pavilion and still hangs in the club office.

On 8 July 1922, the Herts BC visited Royal Household, Windsor and won 93 shots to 46. This was the start of a regular fixture.  In March 1927, the Windsor and Royal Household BC presented the club with a 10 Point Antler of a stag shot by His Majesty King George V at Windsor in recognition of the matches played in past seasons.  This still hangs in the Club Foyer.

In 1959 Indoor bowling started at Herts with a three rink green at Mildred Avenue. This was changed to 4 rinks in 1961 and continued there until 1988 when the Club moved to new premises at Bellmount Wood Avenue. The new premises having a purpose built 6 Rink Indoor Green in addition to the Outdoor Green with its own pavilion.

Over the years Herts Bowling Club has produced a number of Ladies internationals both outdoor and indoor.

In 2017 with the aid of funding from Sport England, extensive refurbishment took place with new bowling carpet and lighting being installed.  Installation of partitioning of the Lounge area enables social functions to be held without impacting on the bowling green area.

This clock was donated by eight member families whose sons had been lost during World War One.
This can be seen in the office.

In March 1927 the Club received from Windsor and the Royal Household BC for matches played in the past seasons, a 10 Point Antler of a stag shot by His Majesty King George Fifth at Windsor.
